1.Gordon Moore, Silicon Valley pioneer who co-founded Intel, dies at 94. A central figure in the history of electronics, Dr. Moore famously predicted in 1965 that computer power would double each year for a decade, a forecast he modified in the mid-1970s to every two years. His prophecy that computing capacity would grow exponentially — and with decreasing costs — was dubbed Moore’s Law and became the standard that scientists for decades raced successfully to meet.
2.OpenAI announced a major upgrade-it is rolling out plug-ins to expand ChatGPT's functionality. The first batch of new functions has been made available to select users and developers and allows the chatbot to tap new sources of live data from the web, rather than being restricted to information from its training data.
The first wave of plugins, which are now available in alpha to select ChatGPT users and developers, allow ChatGPT to tap new sources of live data from the web, including third-party sources such as Expedia, Kayak and Instacart. Prior to this upgrade, ChatGPT was restricted to drawing information from its training data, which ran until 2021.
The chatbot uses extensive data scraped from the internet and elsewhere to produce predictive responses to human prompts. It was previously powered by the GPT-3.5 language model. While that version remains online, an algorithm called GPT-4 is now available with a $20 monthly subscription to ChatGPT Plus.
